What is a golden shower and why do urophiliacs enjoy them? March 2, 2020 – Posted in: Sex Advice, Sexuality – Tags: , , , ,

Golden showers are one notable example of sexual fetishes. While the term, and the act that it describes, has been around for decades or longer, it isn’t something that the majority of people may not have heard of.

Sexual fantasies and kinks are as varied and complicated as any other facet of humanity. As a result, there are some fetishes out there that some people may be surprised by. While everyone has heard – and possibly been weirded out – by foot fetishes, some sex acts are a little more out there.

However, a lot of this changed with the 2016 U.S. presidential election, when a certain figure was reported to enjoy golden showers. According to a report by Pornhub, searches for the term went up by 289 per cent on the site the day after the scandal broke.

While much of this was out of sheer interest in golden showers, there’s still a sizable population of people who enjoy the act; a recent Australian survey reported that 4 per cent of men have an interest in water sports. However, this is estimated to be lower among women.

Despite this, Australia doesn’t even rank in the top 17 countries with larger amounts of people interested in golden showers. Instead, Pornhub claims that the countries most interested in the act are the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland and Germany, which make up the top four.

Because of this, the term because much more well-known, even if many people didn’t know what it specifically referred to.

As a result, many people may have a few questions about the act, such as what are golden showers, and why do people like them? You might want to buckle up, and possibly grab an umbrella.

What Is A Golden Shower?

As some may have guessed, a golden shower is a sex act that involves the use of urine. Typically, this involves one or both participants urinating on each other. Also known as water sports, there are a few other acts that could fall under this umbrella term.

Some of the more notable of these include urinating near or in front of a partner or even watching your partner urinate. However, it should also be noted that there are relatively few rules when it comes to golden showers.

Perhaps the only ones of note focus on consent and urine. Outside of this, though, there is quite a broad range of acts that could fall under the term ‘water sports.’ That being said, however, ‘golden showers’ is usually used to describe the act of urinating on someone or being urinated on.

Alongside this, many people who enjoy golden showers may also enjoy the smell of the fluid, such as on clothes, among other things.

Why Do People Like Golden Showers?

This would naturally lead to many wondering why people like golden showers. While much of this may vary from person to person, there are a few theories about why this is the case. Naturally, an attraction to urine – called urophilia – is the primary reason that people enjoy them.

However, it may occasionally be more complicated than that for some people. For example, a leading theory is that an attraction to urine stems from sadomasochism. In a medical journal from the early 1980’s, it was also put forth that golden showers fulfil more than one function for participants.

For urophiliacs, it’s argued that the act not only addresses a sexual component, but also a need for embarrassment. The motivation changes to enjoying embarrassing somebody, depending on whether the person is doing the urinating.

However, some theories suggest that ‘the naughtiness factor’ may be one of the primary drivers of the act’s popularity. This is something that may also be seen with other sex acts. Some reports also suggest that there’s an intimacy factor at play with the act, which may also be found appealing.

While there’s been a certain amount of research into the topic, dating back since at least the early 1980s, more still needs to be done. As such, this means that there are still some unknowns about why people enjoy golden showers and what may motivate it.

This could make it quite similar to many other fetishes, although some have seen greater degrees of research. As a result, many people have seen golden showers as a relatively young field of study compared to others. Despite this, studies into the area still persist, as are a variety of groups and online discussion boards dedicated to the topic.
