Golden showers are one notable example of sexual fetishes. While the term, and the act that it describes, has been around for decades or longer, it isn’t something that the majority of people may not have heard of.

What Is A Golden Shower?

As some may have guessed, a golden shower is a sex act that involves the use of urine. Typically, this involves one or both participants urinating on each other. Also known as water sports, there are a few other acts that could fall under this umbrella term.

However, it may occasionally be more complicated than that for some people. For example, a leading theory is that an attraction to urine stems from sadomasochism. In a medical journal from the early 1980’s, it was also put forth that golden showers fulfil more than one function for participants.

For urophiliacs, it’s argued that the act not only addresses a sexual component, but also a need for embarrassment. The motivation changes to enjoying embarrassing somebody, depending on whether the person is doing the urinating.

However, some theories suggest that ‘the naughtiness factor’ may be one of the primary drivers of the act’s popularity. This is something that may also be seen with other sex acts. Some reports also suggest that there’s an intimacy factor at play with the act, which may also be found appealing.

While there’s been a certain amount of research into the topic, dating back since at least the early 1980s, more still needs to be done. As such, this means that there are still some unknowns about why people enjoy golden showers and what may motivate it.

This could make it quite similar to many other fetishes, although some have seen greater degrees of research. As a result, many people have seen golden showers as a relatively young field of study compared to others.
